Welcome to my College English 1010 portfolio.

Reflection:
I would recommend this course to any high school senior wanting to get some college credits out of the way. Many high school graduates say that taking this class in high school is extremely helpful because you can focus on your major when you get to college. I never considered writing as one of my strongest subjects, but I have learned so much in this class. Procrastination is not a good idea, and forgetting the little things can hurt, like discussion boards. After taking this course I am much more confident when applying for scholarships, and much more.

Least Favorite Discussion Board: Letter Home (Week 14/15)
Dear Dad, Mom, Robbie, and Hannah November 27, 2013 I may have broken my phone and my laptop is still getting fixed… At least the repair is free. Sorry if you have tried to get a hold of me it has been crazy. My roommate at the beginning of the semester quit after the first class so I got a new one. Her roommate complained a lot about her doing suspicious things so they put her in my room. Her name is Fez. She seamed normal to me until Mom sent me a box of cookies. After she smelled every single cookie she started questioning mom’s food safety knowledge and where the eggs came from. She also likes to clean a lot which is nice and she has an obsession with candy. Other than a few odd quirks she is fine until she is asleep… This girl snores louder than Dad and she yells things in the middle of the night. Most of the time she is with her best friend in Fecund Hall, or with some guy. She often doesn’t come into our room at night, which I don’t mind, because of her snoring. Besides a new roommate my classes are okay. My Introduction to Agricultural Economics is defiantly my favorite class and I have met many great people. So you are probably wondering what happened to my phone and laptop. My roommate thought it would be funny to hide under my bed and scare me after class. I walked into the room and she grabbed my ankles and I threw my phone at her. Throwing things is not usually good and my phone is no longer working. I am not really sure what happened to my laptop, my roommate wanted to see something and she just touched it and it has not been working since. I have a computer science friend who is working on my laptop but hasn’t figured it out. Well time for class so when I get a new phone I will contact you. Love Jaclyn This discussion board post is suppose to be funny, I am not the most humorous writer; I discovered, after hours of writing and deleting things. |
Favorite Discussion Board: Just Do It! (Week 6)
Oh, come on I know you want to do it. Everyone wants to do it at some point in his or her lifetime. Come travel the world with me. The world has 196,935,000 square miles to discover, with seven continents and 195 countries the possibilities are endless. Being introduced to different cultures can be breath taking and confusing. As an eighth grader I decided to join my mom and 40 other people on a missions trip to Kenya. I learned so much more about culture and ethnicity in two weeks than I would have in four years of geography class. Exposure to different lifestyles and areas of the world is something you can only learn with hands on experience. One thing I learned on that trip was how to make men in Switzerland mad. On our trip we had a 24-hour layover in Switzerland, our group decided to go to a cheese factory as soon as we landed. Not having time for a pit stop at the restrooms in the airport, after a nine-hour flight, all forty of us had to use the restroom! The bathrooms in Switzerland are very small and with 90% women we took over the men’s bathroom as soon as all the men were out. A man came to use the restroom and saw that American women had taken over the men’s restroom. We all learned very quickly that it was not okay and very disrespectful! After a stream of words we didn’t understand, us women shuffled out of the bathroom and let him be. This is just one of the lessons you can’t teach in a classroom, with millions more to learn I hope to travel the world again. Just do it, travel the world. A trip or an experience in a different country or culture was my topic. I used development by example for my development style, this style worked best for me because I could tell my story and prove one of the great things about world travel. You could use a compare and contrast style by comparing the negatives and positives of world travel. I like to talk about my trip to Kenya so this was my favorite discussion board to write. |

Response Essay to assignment on 453:
Food stamps and welfare, why work when the government will just gives you what you need. People have lost their sense of Americanism because everything is just given to them. People came to America to start their own life through hard work and it was a shame to take something from the governments. Programs like Muller’s need to be implemented into out society to train young adults to work for what they have and to give them a future. Often I see able high school students choose not to go out for sports to “get a job”. If they get a job it only lasts a couple months because they got bored or did like it. This is the beginning of a very habit, students choosing to sit around at home without a future rather than working for minimum wage preparing for life outside of high school. Volunteering is a great place to get your foot in the door to the future. Students and experience new opportunities that can’t be taught in a classroom. |
My Favorite Descriptive Writing Example:
On page 5 & 6 of me research essay. (Let's Talk Dirt) Why do farmers still farm using conventional tilling methods if no-till has been proven to protect the soil? Many farmers do not want to risk the quality yields with conventional methods to build up their no-till program. When a farmer switches to no-till, it is like the Nebraska Huskers getting a new football coach. The new coach comes and coaches the way he wants, unlike the past one. The players will have to adjust to the new coaching style and may not perform the first couple games as well as the new coach hopes, but after the players become accustomed to the new strategies and game plans, they perform better than before. Like a new coach, the farmer needs a couple growing seasons to build up the soil profile so the crop can succeed. If a farmer switches to no-till, decides that it has not preformed well enough and switches back to conventional tilling, the soil would take a hit, just like the Nebraska Huskers would if they decided to fire their new coach and rehire the old coach. Not everyone can compare farming the the Huskers, and still make a point. This section was my favorite to write and I feel that it describes my point very well. |
